Software Installation 4. Limitations 5. MSDOS 3.1/MSNET 1.01 A. Appendix A - Release History B. Appendix B - Disk Details 1. SUPPLIED DISKS DISK A - Server Boot Disk (single sided). This disk contains all the MSDOS 3.10 system tracks for the server. The system tracks on this disk are for use 㐞on servers ONLY. They should NOT be used for work- stations or single user systems because of a special low loading BIOS that loads over the 40K graphics area. If you have an existing Point 32 system then this disk should be used in conjunction with Disk E, the server back-up. Read the section on server installation before upgrading an existing system. DISK B - Workstation Disk for Apricot PC/Xi (single sided). This disk contains the MSDOS 3.10 system 㐞 Tracks and the parts of the MSNET system to boot-up as a Point 32 Workstation. It will only boot an Apricot PC/Xi with an Apricot LAN card installed. DISK C - Workstation Disk for Apricot F1 and Portable (single sided). This disk is identical in functionality to Disk B but the MSDOS 3.10 system tracks boot an Apricot F1 or Portable with ROM based BIOS's. DISK D - Server Disk for use with the Apricot Bank (single sided). This disk should be used to 㐞boot the server when you run Archive in conjunction with the Apricot Bank. A special disk is required because of the 4K sector size required for the Bank. DISK E - Server Back Up (double sided). This disk contains a back up of the server Winchester and contains the complete MSDOS 3.10 system and utilities, the MSNET 1.01 system, and the ACT disk and network manager utilities. Note that this disk is not mentioned in the current Manager's Guide. 㐞 Server Winchester. Delivered with special server boot tracks, plus complete MSDOS 3.10, MSNET 1.01 and utilities. 2. SUPPLIED DOCUMENTATION Five manuals are provided as follows: 1. Overview This provides an overview of Point 32 and is primarily designed for the Network Manager, Applications Programmers and anyone who wishes to find out general system details. 2. Hardware Installation Guide This provides instructions for layi㐞ng down the network cable, installing LAN boards within the Apricot range of computers, connecting devices to the network, and physically expanding a Point 32. 3. Network Managers Guide This discusses the role of the Network Manager and provides information on: (a) Planning the Network Installation (b) Installing the Network Software (c) Generating the Network Boot Disks for the Workstation Users (d㐞) Maintenance of the Network Software (e) The Network Managers Utilities for i. Archiving files onto floppy disks and the Bank. ii. Formatting Bank Tapes, Winchester and floppies. (f) MSDOS Extensions for the MSDOS 3.10 which are particularly relevant to the networking environment 4. Workstation User's Guide This introduces the user to the networking concepts and details the extra MSDOS commands required by the 㐞user to access the network resources. It relies on users being familiar with non-network MSDOS (or having acces to an MSDOS guide) and also having a rudimentary knowledge of directory structures. 5. Microsoft Pack The ACT MSDOS 2.0 Users Guide. The details of the extra facilities and commands introduced with the release of MSDOS 3 are covered in a section in the Point 32 Managers Guide. 3. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION If you are instal㐞 ling a new Point 32 system then this section is of no relevance. You should read the documentation provided with the server, in particular the Network Managers Guide, which will fully explain the procedure for installing your Point 32 network. What follows is a guide for installing this new release of software onto an existing Point 32 network. The following steps should be carried out in the order specified. (a) With the current Point 32 㐞running, ensure that all other users have finished using the system. Make a backup of the server in case the upgrade causes problems. (b) Using the Workstation with LAN address of 10, enter the following commands: i. USE R: \\\ROOT (password) (ie. connect local drive R: to the root directory of server 0, using the password you assigned to the share). ii. PATH=R:\NETWK㐞MGR iii. CONMGR 0 iv. When you have access to the server, type STOP (c) You should now have the command prompt of the server. Change your logged disk drive to server B> and put Disk A (the server boot tracks disk) into Drive B. Now type INSTALL to run the install batch file procedure on Disk A. This will first put the new MSDOS 3.10 system tracks onto the server Winchester with the㐞 format utility. When the RESTORE starts, replace Disk A with Disk E (server backup). MSNET 1.01 and the associated utilities are restored onto your existing system. Subsequently, some unnecessary files are deleted, and EDLIN is used to update the server batch files. (ALL these operations are run automatically from INSTALL). (d) Now REBOOT your server from the updated Winchester. (e) BOOT workstation wi㐞th LAN address of 10 with either DISK B or DISK C, whichever is appropriate. Then type : i. NETSTART . ii. C: iii. CD\NETWKMGR iv. NETSETUP (f) Once into the network generation utility, select option 6 to create all disks using the existing system definition. Once this is complete, reboot the server; you have then successfully completed upgrading your 㐞Point 32 network to MSDOS 3.10. 4. LIMITATIONS Server: A. For best performance it is advised to only allow up to 6 concurrent users on a 256K server. More workstations can be physically connected and this configuration is particularly useful for users requiring occasional access to the server. B. One 512K server can support up to 32 active work- stations. C. 1 Bank per network. D. All MSNET comma㐞nds are case sensitive - lower case ONLY for future XENIX/UNIX compatibility. Workstation: A. The FCB interface allows applications to continue to read closed files. This is not satisfactory in a multi-user environment and therefore is not supported across the network. B. No disk formatting across network. C. No CONTROL DEVICE calls across network. Bank: A. For performance reasons, the Bank is only available㐞 with the server down, via the console manager, and write with verify is not supported. B. Bank driver does not support sub-directories. Archive: A. Back-up destination disks should be pre-formatted. B. Control/C is not inhibited. MSDOS 3.10/MSNET 1.01: A. DBASEII Version 2.4 cannot be loaded across the network. All of DBASEII files must exist locally to run with MSDOS 3.10. This is connected with the 㐞 inability to read closed files. B. OPEN ACCESS versions prior to V 1.03 will not run across the network. This problem is caused by using FCB CREATE FILE to detect the presence of a file and if it is present then OPENING it again. In single-user mode this generates a single FCB, but via the REDIRECTOR two handles are generated. C. MSBASIC interpreter will crash if during operation an INT24h is generated eg: 㐞 disk not present. Miscellaneous: A. CONSOLE/CONMGR subsystem does not support graphics applications. B. To print/spool a file across the network from Wordstar V3.30, LPRN.COM must be first loaded in the workstation. This is found in the \dosutils sub-directory on the server. C. The workstation USE display of connected devices shows PRN: as LPT1. D. MSDOS command CLS (clear screen) does not 㐞 work. 5. MSDOS 3.10/MSNET 1.01 ENHANCEMENTS The following is a synopsis of enhancements over MSDOS 3.06/MSNET 1.0 releases. Refer to 1985 Manager's Guide for full details. A. Date and Time. This is now automatically synchronised throughout a Point 32 by use of a Date and Time utility. The utility is run in all machines at bootup and overcomes the problem of erroneous Date and Time in servers. See Manager's 㐞Guide Chapter 8 for details. B. Extended help texts available at workstations, evoked by NET HELP. Type NET HELP for full list. C. Workstation commands to temporarily suspend print redirection, thus allowing easy access to local printer. These are "net pause prdr" and "net cont prdr". Direct users to on-line help for quick description. D. Workstation commands for interrogating the server 㐞 print queue; See User's Guide Chapter 4 for details. E. Printing. A number of commands have been added to improve control of network printing. Server commands are: i) Print cancel. Stops current print and deletes it from queue. ii) Optional separator banner page between user's jobs: Separator on/off command. See Manager's Guide Chapter 9 for details of both the above. F. Server "File㐞" command - displays a list of files held open by users, and any locks in force. Also allows closing of files left open by users. See Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. G. Server "Error" command - displays/deletes a log of network errors held in the server. See Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. H. Server load command syntax includes new parameter "/c" defining the maximum number of connections supp㐞orted. I. The number of simultaneous connections supported by a server is no longer restricted to 100 J. The XPORT layer will now detect a workstation going inactive and clear down its connections within the server. K. The XPORT layer now implements the DATAGRAM service. This has been done to allow the implementation of TIME/DATE synchronisation across any one local area network. SPR #231 - NET NAME will now correctly find SETNAME in the DOSUTILS subdirectory. vi. SPR #232 - NET HELP will no longer display unsupported options. vii. SPR #237 - it is now possible to DISCONNECT, USE /d, from either㐞 PRN or AUX when current logged drive is either P: or A: respectively. viii. Any one server can now have up to 32 simultaneous connections, this was previously 30. ix. TIME/DATE synchronisation is now enforced across any one POINT32 local area network. e. CONSOLE 1.2 (CONSOLE, CONMGR) bugs fixed:- ------- i. SPR #194 - exiting the CONSOLE MANAGER from a workstation no longer causes a rubbish character to be 㐞 sent to the server. f. NETWORK MANAGER 1.2 bugs fixed:- --------------- i. SPR #162 - problems with batch file produced to build the workstation disks being empty have been removed. ii. SPR #236 - an alias of more than 8 characters will never be supported by the USE utility. NETGEN will now insist that all aliases are no longer than 8 characters. iii. SPR #258 - an empty NETADDR file no longer causes NETGEN to crash. iv. 㐞The number of buffers allocated in the SERVER CONFIG.SYS is no longer set to 2, but set to the number of FAT sectors for the winchester plus one per session. v. All the configuration adjustments in version 1.1 to get around the problems with SERVER 1.0 on 512K systems have been removed. In particular the limitation of a maximum of 120 open files on the SERVER. vi. NETGEN will now always put a ":" between switches and the㐞ir parameters as now insisted upon by the MICROSOFT utilities. SUPPLIED DISKS DISK A - Server Boot Disk (single sided). This disk contains all the MSDOS 3.10 system tracks for the server. The system tracks on this disk are for㐞 use on servers ONLY. This disk contains the MSDOS 3.㐞10 system Tracks and the parts of the MSNET system to boot-up as a Point 32 Workstation. Note that this disk is not mentioned in the current Manager's G㐞$uide. Server Winchester. 2. Hardware Installation Guide This provides instructio㐞$ns for laying down the network cable, installing LAN boards within the Apricot range of computers, connecting devices to the network, and physically expanding a Point 32. 3. Network Managers Guide This discusses the role of the Network Manager and provides information on: (a) Planning the Network Installation (b) Installing the Network Software (c) Generating the Network Boot Disks for the Workstation Users 㐞$ (d) Maintenance of the Network Software (e) The Network Managers Utilities for i. Archiving files onto floppy disks and the Bank. ii. Formatting Bank Tapes, Winchester and floppies. (f) MSDOS Extensions for the MSDOS 3.10 which are particularly relevant to the networking environment 4. Workstation User's Guide This introduces the user to the networking concepts and details the extra MSDOS commands requi㐞$red by the user to access the network resources. 3. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION If you㐞 $ are installing a new Point 32 system then this section is of no relevance. You should read the documentation provided with the server, in particular the Network Managers Guide, which will fully explain the procedure for installing your Point 32 network. What follows is a guide for installing this new release of software onto an existing Point 32 network. The following steps should be carried out in the order specified. (a) With the curren㐞%t Point 32 running, ensure that all other users have finished using the system. Make a backup of the server in case the upgrade causes problems. (b) Using the Workstation with LAN address of 10, enter the following commands: i. USE R: \\\ROOT (password) (ie. connect local drive R: to the root directory of server 0, using the password you assigned to the share). ii. PA㐞%TH=R:\NETWKMGR iii. This will first put the new MSDOS 3.10 system tracks onto the server Winchester 㐞% with the format utility. (e) BOOT wor㐞%kstation with LAN address of 10 with either DISK B or DISK C, whichever is appropriate. Then type : i. NETSTART . ii. C: iii. CD\NETWKMGR iv. NETSETUP (f) Once into the network generation utility, select option 6 to create all disks using the existing system definition. Once this is complete, reboot the server; you have then successfully completed upgrading your 㐞% Point 32 network to MSDOS 3.10. D. All 㐞%MSNET commands are case sensitive - lower case ONLY for future XENIX/UNIX compatibility. Workstation: A. The FCB interface allows applications to continue to read closed files. This is not satisfactory in a multi-user environment and therefore is not supported across the network. B. No disk formatting across network. C. No CONTROL DEVICE calls across network. Bank: A. For performance reasons, the Bank is onl㐞%y available with the server down, via the console manager, and write with verify is not supported. This is connected㐞% with the inability to read closed files. C. MSBASIC interpreter will crash if during operation an INT24h is gen㐞 %erated eg: disk not present. D. MSDOS command CLS (clear screen) does 㐞&not work. See㐞& Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. D. Workstation commands for interrogating the server㐞& print queue; See User's Guide Chapter 4 for details. E. Printing. A number of commands have been added to improve control of network printing. Server commands are: i) Print cancel. Stops current print and deletes it from queue. ii) Optional separator banner page between user's jobs: Separator on/off command. See Manager's Guide Chapter 9 for details of both the above. F. S㐞&erver "File" command - displays a list of files held open by users, and any locks in force. Also allows closing of files left open by users. See Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. G. Server "Error" command - displays/deletes a log of network errors held in the server. See Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. H. Supplied Disks 2. Supplied Documentation 3. Software Installation 4. Limitations 5. MSDOS 3.1/MSNET 1.01 Enhancements A. Appendix A - Release History B. Appendix B - Disk Details 1. SUPPLIED DISKS DISK A - Server Boot Disk (single sided). This disk contains all the MSDOS 3.10 system tracks for the server. The system tracks on this disk are for㐞6 use on servers ONLY. This disk contains the MSDOS 3.㐞610 system Tracks and the parts of the MSNET system to boot-up as a Point 32 Workstation. This disk should 㐞6be used to boot the server when you run Archive in conjunction with the Apricot Bank. Note that this disk is not mentioned in the current Manager's G㐞 6uide. Server Winchester. 2. Hardware Installation Guide This provides instructio㐞7ns for laying down the network cable, installing LAN boards within the Apricot range of computers, connecting devices to the network, and physically expanding a Point 32. 3. Network Managers Guide This discusses the role of the Network Manager and provides information on: (a) Planning the Network Installation (b) Installing the Network Software (c) Generating the Network Boot Disks for the Workstation Users 㐞7 (d) Maintenance of the Network Software (e) The Network Managers Utilities for i. Archiving files onto floppy disks and the Bank. ii. Formatting Bank Tapes, Winchester and floppies. (f) MSDOS Extensions for the MSDOS 3.10 which are particularly relevant to the networking environment 4. Workstation User's Guide This introduces the user to the networking concepts and details the extra MSDOS commands requi㐞7red by the user to access the network resources. 3. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION If you㐞7 are installing a new Point 32 system then this section is of no relevance. You should read the documentation provided with the server, in particular the Network Managers Guide, which will fully explain the procedure for installing your Point 32 network. What follows is a guide for installing this new release of software onto an existing Point 32 network. The following steps should be carried out in the order specified. (a) With the curren㐞7t Point 32 running, ensure that all other users have finished using the system. Make a backup of the server in case the upgrade causes problems. (b) Using the Workstation with LAN address of 10, enter the following commands: i. USE R: \\\ROOT (password) (ie. connect local drive R: to the root directory of server 0, using the password you assigned to the share). ii. PA㐞7TH=R:\NETWKMGR iii. This will first put the new MSDOS 3.10 system tracks onto the server Winchester 㐞7 with the format utility. (e) BOOT wor㐞7kstation with LAN address of 10 with either DISK B or DISK C, whichever is appropriate. Then type : i. NETSTART . ii. C: iii. CD\NETWKMGR iv. NETSETUP (f) Once into the network generation utility, select option 6 to create all disks using the existing system definition. Once this is complete, reboot the server; you have then successfully completed upgrading your 㐞 7 Point 32 network to MSDOS 3.10. D. All 㐞8MSNET commands are case sensitive - lower case ONLY for future XENIX/UNIX compatibility. Workstation: A. The FCB interface allows applications to continue to read closed files. This is not satisfactory in a multi-user environment and therefore is not supported across the network. B. No disk formatting across network. C. No CONTROL DEVICE calls across network. Bank: A. For performance reasons, the Bank is onl㐞8y available with the server down, via the console manager, and write with verify is not supported. This is connected㐞8 with the inability to read closed files. C. MSBASIC interpreter will crash if during operation an INT24h is gen㐞8erated eg: disk not present. D. MSDOS command CLS (clear screen) does 㐞8not work. See㐞8 Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. D. Workstation commands for interrogating the server㐞8 print queue; See User's Guide Chapter 4 for details. E. Printing. A number of commands have been added to improve control of network printing. Server commands are: i) Print cancel. Stops current print and deletes it from queue. ii) Optional separator banner page between user's jobs: Separator on/off command. See Manager's Guide Chapter 9 for details of both the above. F. S㐞8erver "File" command - displays a list of files held open by users, and any locks in force. Also allows closing of files left open by users. See Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. G. Server "Error" command - displays/deletes a log of network errors held in the server. See Manager's Guide Chapter 8 for details. H. Server load command syntax includes new parameter "/c" defining the maximum number of conne㐞 8ctions supported. SPR #233 - record locking in DENY WRITE mode now functions correctly. iv. SPR #234 - close of a file with outstanding locks v. SPR #235 - the IOCTL call, INT 21h CMD 44h to check if a drive is local or remote now functions correctly. b. XPORT 1.2 bugs fixed:- ----- i. SPR #187 - when using t㐞9he CONSOLE subsystem with many other workstations active, no longer causes the server to crash. This was a problem with multiple socket handling in the driver. ii. SPR #226 - XPORT now traps and throws out CNTRL/C. c. BANK 1.2 bugs fixed:- ---- i. SPR #329 - the BANK driver now handles tape change correctly. ii. BANK driver will now HALT system if the field in the label sector MAX_SECTOR_SIZE is not set to 4K. d. MSNET 㐞91.01 (SERVER,SESSION,REDIR,PSPRINT,USE) bugs fixed:- ---------- i. SPR #189 - Using applications that print using INT 21h CMD 5 now no longer requires the user to DISCONNECT and then RECONNECT to the PRN device between executions of the program. ii. SPR #227 - the server PRINT SPOOLER no longer replaces the occasionally 512th character with a space when despooling. iii. SPR #228 - Applications using INT 21h CMD 5 for printing n㐞9o longer have the last MOD 128 characters not spooled. iv. SPR #229 - NET PRINT KILL at the SERVER command line will now only purge that file from the print queue and not the next file as well. v. SPR #231 - NET NAME will now correctly find SETNAME in the DOSUTILS subdirectory. vi. SPR #232 - NET HELP will no longer display unsupported options. vii. SPR #237 - it is now possible to DISCONNECT, USE /d, 㐞9from either PRN or AUX when current logged drive is either P: or A: respectively. SPR #194 - exiting the CONSOLE MANAGER from a workstation no longer causes a rubbish character to be 㐞9 sent to the server. f. NETWORK MANAGER 1.2 bugs fixed:- --------------- i. SPR #162 - problems with batch file produced to build the workstation disks being empty have been removed. ii. SPR #236 - an alias of more than 8 characters will never be supported by the USE utility. NETGEN will now insist that all aliases are no longer than 8 characters. iii. SPR #258 - an empty NETADDR file no longer causes NETGEN to crash.㐞9 iv. The number of buffers allocated in the SERVER CONFIG.SYS is no longer set to 2, but set to the number of FAT sectors for the winchester plus one per session. v. All the configuration adjustments in version 1.1 to get around the problems with SERVER 1.0 on 512K systems have been removed. In particular the limitation of a maximum of 120 open files on the SERVER. vi. NETGEN will now always put a ":" between switches and 㐞 9 their parameters as now insisted upon by the MICROSOFT utilities.
